Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. It’s one of the oldest proverbs and one we’ve heard many times.
At Village Lift our mission quite simply is to teach individuals how to “fish”. We support training of men and women so that they can earn a livelihood and achieve self-sustainability. These are men and women living under very challenging conditions with minimal opportunities.
On March 5, International Women's Day, Village Lift launched a Goat Farming project in Purulia, West Bengal, India. Fifteen women were empowered with a female goat each, promising not only a sustainable source of milk for their children but also the prospect of expanding their herds. These women vow to pay it forward by gifting a baby goat to another deserving woman in their community.
With 25 sewing machines & 2 shifts (6 hours each), 50 women will learn to sew and generate income for themselves and their family. West Bengal, India.
Examples include:
Women will be trained to make screw pine bags and gift items for Village Lift to sell in the U.S. This craft is practiced by artisans in Kerala dating back 800 years.
