Embroidered Jewelry from Kosovo - The Story
The 1998-1999 Kosovo War devastated countless lives, forcing nearly one million Kosovar Albanians to flee and subjecting around 20,000 people to sexual violence as a weapon of war, according to CDC and Human Rights Watch reports.
The Center for the Promotion of Women’s Rights in Drenas, Kosovo, supports 312 survivors through advocacy, raising awareness, and breaking the silence surrounding these atrocities. In 2017, the Center launched a program where survivors handcraft unique jewelry and artifacts, fostering creativity, aiding psychosocial recovery, and providing economic empowerment.
These one-of-a-kind, hand-embroidered pieces symbolize survival, resilience, and hope, raising global awareness about sexual war crimes and amplifying the voices of survivors in their fight for justice.
